One woman has died following a two-alarm fire at Griggs Manor Supportive Housing in Mimico.
Toronto fire crews were called to the highrise residence on Cavell Avenue and Royal York Boulevard around 11:30 on Monday morning for reports of a fire on a floor in the building.
Toronto police said a woman was trapped inside an apartment, located at 100 Cavell Avenue.
Crews were able to get to the woman and evacuated the building.
Toronto fire chief Matthew Pegg confirmed the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Fire Marshall supervisor Manny Garcia said the fire has not been deemed suspicious in nature but that investigators will continue to work towards determining the cause.
“We’re very early in our investigation and we work it systematically,” said Garcia.
“How did that individual not escape? Were they overcome, did they have some type of medical emergency prior to the fire, these are things that we standardly look at each and every fire.”
Toronto police said Ontario’s Fire Marshall’s office will now take over the investigation and that the scene will be closed for some time.
