A 34-year-old man is dead after emergency crews found him in what’s believed to be a drug lab near Eglinton Avenue East and Mount Pleasant Road.

Hazmat (Hazardous Materials] and CBRN (Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear) teams were called to a second-floor unit at an apartment building on Broadway Avenue just before 10 p.m. on Tuesday.

Const. Victor Kwong told CityNews a friend of the victim called 911 after he found the man unconscious in the apartment. He had not heard from his friend in a couple of days and went to the unit to check on him.

When crews arrived on scene, they found the man without vital signs and discovered the suspected drug lab.

He was pronounced at the scene. The cause of death is not yet known, but police said it is not considered suspicious.

A dog and some pet snakes were also found in the apartment. Toronto Animal Services were called but they have not entered the unit due to safety reasons.

Police were seen carrying a gun and a bag, which looked to contain drugs, from the scene. However, Kwong could not confirm those details.

Some nearby apartments were evacuated as a precaution.

CBRN declared the area safe around 2:30 a.m.
